50 Years of Computing and Computing Science
at Newcastle University
It is 50 years since computing was established at Newcastle University, through the
creation of the Computing Laboratory in 1957. We use the term "computing",
as for a long time there was no separation between the service side of computing
and the academic side which were both part of the Computing Laboratory. In 1992 the
Department of Computing Science was established along with the University Computing Service (UCS).
More recent renamings have resulted in the School of Computing Science and Information Systems
and Services (ISS) as the titles in existence today. No doubt other renamings will
further complicate the picture by the year 2057!
Whatever name you know us by, or have associations through, we hope you will
be interested in the celebrations and events that we are planning to celebrate the
first 50 years. Staff, students, users, visitors, present, past or future - you are
all welcome to participate.
We are actively developing plans for these celebrations, and we will update this page
as things progress. If you want to keep abreast
of what we are organising, please bookmark this page, and/or complete the form
below if you'd like us to inform you directly about changes. (Naturally, we will only use email
addresses for events related to the 50th celebrations.)
We look forward to meeting up you at some of the to-be-announced events.
John Lloyd, past Head of School, Computing Science
Pete Lee, Head of School, Computing Science
Paul Hopkins, Director of ISS.
